Data Security in K-12 School Districts
Key words in data security are confidentiality, integrity, and availability. While K-12 school districts can address data security by putting systems and policies into place, I suspect that one additional issue is often overlooked. That is, data security is a people issue. Network administrators can't do it all. It takes knowledgeable and vigilant staff and students to support the process. One might categorize security at macro and micro levels.

Ace-Comm Provides Managed Mobility for Project K-Nect
Yesterday we reported on the launch of Project K-Nect, an initiative of the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction that provides smart phones and service free of charge to at risk students to help increase their performance in school. Speak Up Survey: Is Technology Missing the Mark?
The majority of parents in the United States are unsatisfied with the way technology is implemented in K-12 schools. At the same time, the majority of educators say that students are more engaged in school work as a result of technology implementations and that there is a corresponding increase in student achievement, according to a new survey released this week by Project Tomorrow-NetDay.

Securing the Learning Environment Against Anonymous Proxies
Ask most administrators what the biggest threat to the online learning environment is today, and you'll most likely be deafened by the resounding reply of "anonymous proxies!" Security technology provider MDI recently announced that it received an initial blanket purchase order totaling $25.3 million from Stratis Authority for its Learn Safe school safety and security program. The order was based on an initial Scope of Work submitted by MDI and approved by Stratis Authority to provide security products and professional services to multiple school districts located in the Southeast.

NY District Installs IP Camera System
CDW Government and Axis Communications recently announced the companies have installed network cameras at the Middletown City Schools in Orange County, NY. Approximately 265 Axis network cameras were installed as a campus security threat deterrent across the entire district, including seven educational buildings and two administrative buildings.

The service, "Talk About It," from AnComm, lets students report their problems anonymously to school personnel via the Internet. Sweetwater becomes the first district in Wyoming to implement Talk About It.

Conroe ISD To Improve Emergency Response with SASI
Conroe Independent School District (CISD) in Conroe, TX has contracted with SASI Consulting to work on the district's emergency response and preparedness programs in conjunction with Harris County Department of Education. Last summer the district received a grant from the United States Department of Education for the purpose.

Iowa Districts Opt for Infinite SIS
Four school districts in Iowa have selected Infinite Campus as the supplier of their student education process management systems. These include Burlington Community School District, Johnston Community School District, Oskaloosa Community School District, and Southeast Polk Community School District. Implementations were handled in conjunction with ViPS of Marion, IA, which is providing support as well.
