Report: States Fill In for Feds in Ed Tech

Federal funding for technology in K-12 schools has declined drastically since 2002, but states are stepping in to cover the deficit, providing districts with line items within state budgets and offering alternatives for schools and districts to purchase technology. This according to a report released this month by the State Educational Technology Directors Association (SETDA), "State Educational Technology Funding Report: State of the States."

Beyond Curriculum Mapping: Using Technology To Delve Deeper into Inquiry Learning

Our elementary school staff decided to take an evaluative look at the use of technology in the classroom through a self-study process and a district technology initiative called Project 2000 over a two-year period. The faculty had the opportunity to determine a new direction relative to technology integration, and, to that aim, we determined that curriculum mapping, study groups, and an onsite technology coach would be a model for our professional development efforts.

DeVry Offers Master's Program in Educational Technology

DeVry University recently announced its new Master of Science in Educational Technology program. The curriculum is designed for K-12 educators, as well as other types of instructors, to understand the best ways to use technology for the classroom.

DOE Software Study: Are the Numbers Flawed?

The United States Department of Education (ED) Thursday released the results of a study measuring the impact of math and reading software on student achievement. The results? "Test scores were not significantly higher in classrooms using selected reading and mathematics software products." This didn't sit well with organizations (or individuals) in education technology. Several responded to the study, denouncing the research as flawed or cautioning careful scrutiny of the data.

Making the Most of Technology at Hand

With just a handful of digital cameras and networked computers to serve 250 students, Media Specialist Johanna Riddle is hardly rolling in technology. But at Samsula Elementary, a small rural elementary school in Volusia County in Florida, she uses a small range of powerful--and fun--software products, along with a philosophy of making do with what she has, to move students beyond the printed page.

California District To Roll Out Laptops for Teachers and Students

This summer Hacienda La Puente Unified School District in California will begin the first phase of a new program supplying laptop computers to students in fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, and ninth grades. These students will be given Dell Latitude D620 notebooks for use for four years in classrooms and at home.

Adobe Debuts Creative Suite 3

Adobe today debuted its all-new lineup of creative apps with the formal announcement of Adobe Creative Suite 3. Most of new versions of the individual apps will launch in April, with some stragglers holding out until the third quarter. The company has also completely revamped its K-12 education licensing and plans to launch new certification programs in the summer.

TEA Launches School Leadership Pilot Program

The Texas Education Agency (TEA) has awarded a $3 million grant to APQC to develop and launch a "School Leadership Pilot Program" for principals. Through the program, up to 300 principals will receive professional development and training in an effort to "transform school leadership."

PBS has debuted a new online portal designed specifically for Prek-12 educations: PBS Teachers. The portal, in development for more than a year, provides a "front door" for educational services offered by PBS.

GACE Expands Faculty Resources

The Georgia Professional Standards Commission has expanded its resources for teacher certification. The new resources, developed by National Evaluation Systems, a unit of Pearson Education, have been added to the Georgia Assessments for the Certification of Educators (GACE) Web site.

Pennsylvania DOE Adopts Real-Time Collaboration Tools

The Pennsylvania Department of Education will implement new real-time collaboration capabilities using LiveAccess from Vemics Inc., a developer of collaboration and learning tools. Live Access combines multipoint video, voice, and data technologies with content, consulting, and customer support.

Labor Dept. Allocates $3 Million for Teacher Distance Learning

The United States Labor Department today announced that it's issuing a $3 million grant to the Western Governors University (WGU) in Salt Lake City, UT. The monies will be used to expand distance learning for students in the teaching profession, with particular emphasis on math and science.

Cherokee County Uses ViewCast for Distance Learning

Cherokee County School District in South Carolina has implemented new technologies in two of its high schools to support its distance learning courses. The district has adopted ViewCast's Niagara GoStream portable streaming media encoder to capture and encode classes, which are then broadcast to students unable to attend in person.

Brevard County Adopts Atomic's Tech Training

Florida's Brevard County Public Schools has implemented a new professional development and student training program using Atomic Learning's online training tools. Atomic is a developer of Web-based software designed specifically for training educators and students on the use of technologies. According to the company, this latest deal with Brevard County brings the total number os students and teachers using its software to more than 1 million and the total number of schools in Florida using its tools to more than 1,200.
