National Science, Math Resources Hit the Web

g'ENC.comIn preparation for the loss of its US Department of Education funding at the end of September, the Eisenhower National Clearinghouse for Mathematics and Science Education (www.dssc.org/frc/TAGuide/eisen/eisXI.htm) has created the subscription-based Web site g'ENC.com, to continue its role as a comprehensive resource for K-12 math and science educators.

At $349 a year for a school-wide license, g'ENC.com provides educators with thousands of online lesson plans and activities to support standards-based teaching, a searchable catalog of math and science curriculum resources, an online magazine, and professional development tools. The site also features a section that offers suggestions to fund the subscription.

If you’re looking for a less expensive science tool, the National Science Teachers Association (www.nsta.org) has unveiled an online science toolbox to more effectively and efficiently help teachers locate targeted science content and teaching resources from NSTA-reviewed Web sites. Organized by major science topics and broken down into three grade levels, WebWatchers SciGuides (sciguides.nsta.org) provide content specific info, lesson plans (including vignettes, case studies, teacher audio clips), teacher tips, and student assessments that can be incorporated into classroom instruction. Currently, 14 SciGuides are available, covering a range of topics such as genetics, severe weather, and organisms, with additional SciGuides scheduled to come out in the fall. Each one-year subscription unit is $4.95 (member), $5.95 (non-member).
