Mississippi Schools Tap Streaming Media

The Mississippi Department of Education has expanded its MATRIX Learning program, a collaborative K-12 education initiative in partnership with Mississippi Public Broadcasting. As part of the expansion, the program will now include digital media content from a special edition of Discovery Education streaming called MPB Express-Discovery Education streaming.

The MATRIX ("Middle School Achievement through Technology-Rich Intervention") Learning program is an effort to integrate technology into the education process, particularly for students who may otherwise be apathetic toward learning. The program involves mobile devices, digital media creation tools, and, now, Discovery's streaming media service.

"MATRIX Learning integrates the latest digital devices with the best educational content," said Nancy Pearson, director of educational technology for MPB, in a statement released last week. "Today's students are surrounded by technology. From camera-phones to iPods, kids are wired like never before. MATRIX Learning capitalizes on students' familiarity with technology, making all these tools conduits through which we can teach important concepts and lessons."

Discovery Education streaming offers more than 4,000 full-length videos and other resources, including photography, reference articles, curriculum development, assignment creation, and test creation tools. The service is being offered to schools throughout Mississippi by MPB's Education Services Department.
