San Diego USD Receives $250,000 Teach Award
San Diego Unified School District in Southern California was presented Friday with $250,000 in the Best Buy 2007 Teach Award. The program recognizes "exceptionally creative use of interactive technology to help make learning fun for K-12 students."
According to Best Buy, SDUSD received the award for its Unsung Heroes program, an initiative implemented across the district that gets students to interview people in the community using consumer electronics and documenting stories of "heroism and courage." The money from the award will be used to implement Unsung Heroes in five schools in SDUSD.
SDUSD took top honors in the Best Buy Teach Award, but 1,300 classrooms each received $2,500 earlier this year as part of the program, and 50 of those were selected to receive an additional $15,000 to fund learning programs. Since 2003, the Teach Awards program has granted $14 million to some 5,000 schools in the United States. Almost 87,000 schools applied for the 2007 program, in which a total of $4.5 million was awarded.
